Today, Alaska is home to over 700,000 people and is so diverse that over 90 languages are spoken by students of the Anchorage School District alone. But prior to the arrival of the Russians in the mid 1700s, the population consisted primarily of five major Native groups. Their contributions to the history and culture of the state are still important today. Here a few of the ways Alaska profits from her earliest people.
- Researchers depend upon Native ways of knowing about their environment to provide guidance for outdoor research activities.
- Native values for the natural world, for a strong community and for the preservation of traditions provide a needed counter-balance to the corporate values of industry.
- The fantastic creativity as seen in the Native arts enriches the whole community.
This webquest is designed to give you the opportunity to explore many facets of Native culture in such a way that you can share what you learn with others.
