Lesson 2 - Europe Overview

Lesson Objectives:

  • Learn the countries of Europe
  • Discover interesting facts about Europe

Welcome to your second week of class! This week we will be taking a look at the countries that make up Europe. I will be supplying maps this week. Feel free to print them if you want to.

Next week we will start studying the landmarks!

Activities for this week:

  • Click on the world map below. See where Europe is in relation to the United States.
  • Now click on the map of Europe below. This map lists all of the countries that make up Europe. Pay special attention to where France, Britain, Italy, Ireland, Russia, Germany, Greece, Spain and Belgium are located.
  • Play National Geographic's GeoSpy game to test your knowledge of Europe's countries! If you choose the incorrect country in the the game will highlight the correct one for you in yellow. This is a great way for you to learn the countries of Europe. You can play as many times as you want to. You can also use the map I have given you. First, open the GeoSpy game and then read the directions that I have supplied for you.
  • Now let's learn facts about Europe! Go to the CIA World Factbook online and choose three countries from this list to research: France, Britain, Italy, Ireland, Russia, Germany, Greece, Belgium, or Spain. Look at your map! For each country you choose, find the population, languages spoken, and one other fact of your choice. You should have a total of three facts for each country. I have provided instructions if you need help navigating the website.
  • In the Week 2 Discussion Board:
    • List the 3 European countries that you researched this week and list the
      • population of each country you chose
      • languages spoken in the each of the countries you chose
      • one interesting fact you found on each of the countries you chose

Summary:
  • Review the maps of the world and Europe.
  • Play the GeoSpy game
  • Research three European countries and post your results to the discussion board.
