Learner Description: this activity is intended for a high school health class.

Introduction

This is a jigsaw activity about the human body. Each student is to learn about a particular system within the human body and become a subject matter expert for their fellow students. Then they will be asked to split from their original group to teach the system they learned within another group.

Instructions

The class will be asked to form groups of 4-5 (in a class of 30). This is your home group, those who aren't in a group will be placed in one by the teacher. From the home group the students will each pick one of the following body systems to learn about (those undecided will be assigned one by the teacher): Cardiovascular, Muscular, Skeletal, Nervous, Digestive, or Reproductive. Each of the body systems will have a group where they will search the internet (only the approved sites by the teacher)

After the expert groups have gathered their information the students will go back to their home group to share what they learned. The students need to complete the following tasks or answer the following questions about their assigned body system:

  1. List 2 diseases that affect the assigned body system and how they affect the body.
  2. What are the essential functions of the system?
  3. Pick 5 organs and list their function.
  4. Why couldn't we live without this system?
  5. List 3 interesting facts about this system.
