Integrating Technology for Science Classes
Technology Teaching Strategies for Grades 7 through 12
Internet Instruction
There are so many resources for teaching science on the Internet that an instructor could easily spend hours just researching the different avenues that are available. This page will look at a specific strategy for integrating the Internet into your teaching.
Internet Integration Highlight: Using a Wiki to Teach Science

wikisOne of the most talked about uses of the Internet in different subject areas recently has been in the implementation of what are called "Wikis". Basically a Wiki is a cross between a Web site and a word processing document. Because of the nature of this vehicle, a Wiki is a very easy online tool to learn. The most powerful aspect of the Wiki, is the ability for students to use it as a collaborative device. Students can give each other access rights to a Wiki as a group, so that only a specific group of people can add their share of input at anytime. Below is just one method that a Wiki and the Internet can be used in this manner to teach science.

Integration Strategy: Using a Wiki to Teach 11th Grade Science

Collaboration is one of the most powerful aspects of using a Wiki and the ability to use one in a teaching environment can make just about any science project or subject a very enriching experience. For example, an 11th grade class could work collaboratively on a subject like peripheral vision ion and how it compares between males and females. The teacher could post the information on the wiki and students could add reports, data and theories on the very same page. Also, because the Wiki is so easily accessed and controlled by class members, students can read and learn about each others ideas and experiences.

Relative Advantage of Using a Wiki: If a lesson like this were assigned to a class and the students were divided into groups, it would allow each group to see their group members work. This would give them the advantage of not duplicating each others work or the ability to view the resources that they have already used as a group. Of course a Wiki also gives the students a vehicle in which to post and edit each other's work and resources. This allows them the ability to freely collaborate, share and divide their efforts into a project that they can all be a part of.

Expected Outcome of Using a Wiki:
Students will be able to publish a polished document over the Internet that will allow the information to be allowed to be shared in the online community. If the data and information is correct it can be saved online as a resource and example for similar work and studies. Another benefit of this type of Internet tool is the ability for the instructor to be able to see and monitor students progress and work on a project and assignment. Teachers can log in and see specifically who posted work and what work was completed.
