How do
you make a vision statement a living document that shapes the actions your
department takes?
It
appears to me that creating a vision statement is really easy; but creating one
that is a living document and shapes the actions of a department will take some
careful planning if it is really going to be used for its intended purpose of
defining a path necessary for success.
There
are numerous steps that will increase the chances that a vision statement will
shape the actions of a department.
·
Bringing together employees in the creation process
and seeking their input is crucial. If
there is company “buy-in” to the vision then the statement is much more likely
to shape the actions that the department takes.
If the company is creating a vision statement just for the sake of
saying that they have a vision statement then it is much less likely that the
document will do much more than collect dust.
·
The vision statement needs to be clear and more
than just a cliché.
·
The goals of the department/company need to be
aligned with the vision.
·
Make sure that when the vision statement is created
that it is easily and frequently seen by the employees. This helps serve as a reminder of what
everyone should be collectively striving for in regards to the big picture of
the company.
I find
that in working with and leading a coaching staff it is essential to make sure
that everyone is comfortable with the direction that you are trying to take
them. I am not saying to be wishy-washy
and change your goals or focus because of dissenting voices; but it is
important to listen to everyone’s take and let them know that you truly are
taking their input and not just giving them lip service.
When the
vision statement is worded in a way in which the company can agree with then it
is time to publicize it, discuss it, and make sure that all involved are
implementing it. When that is happening
then you have made a vision statement which is a living document and can shape
the actions of a department.
