Most students prefer to use the Internet for school research. Therefore it is important that the students understand the necessity of website evaluation.

1. Determine the authorship

Anyone can publish anything on the Web. Check the author of the site.

Is there an author listed? Who is sponsoring this site?

Can the author's/sponsor's credentials be verified?

Check the domain name to determine the type of server hosting the site.

2. Accuracy

There are no 'web' editor to verify the information nor are there any standards for the WWW.

Is there an editor for this site?

Can the information be cross reference against a different site or print source?

3. Objectivity

Is the information fact or the author's opinion?

Is the information provided with bias? Is there an abundance of advertising?

Keep in mind that anyone can publish anything to the Web. Can the information be verified?

4. Currency

When was this information posted on the Web? Is it the most current information? Does time matter for this topic?

5. Coverage

Does the site provide a thorough coverage of the topic?

Does the site link to additional sites for cross referencing and further research?
