Southeast Asia

	The area known as French Indochina was incorporated by the Japanese into their empire before World War II. After the war, the area was given its independence. The countries of Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam were created, but internal struggles for power created chaos in many areas.
	Pol Pot became dictator in Cambodia. His forces, known as the Khmer Rouge, instituted a brutal policy of forced migration back to farms in the country--almost 2 million people were killed or starved to death.
	Ho Chi Minh's communist party in North Vietnam was supported by the Chinese communist government and invaded the south. The US sent troops and money to South Vietnam to fight off the communists, but were unsuccessful.
