LBD
METHODS
The methods of
the Learning by Doing Theory of Instructional Design
include seven
essential
components of a goal-based scenario.
1) The goals
must include the
learning of process knowledge as well as content knowledge.
2) The mission
must be realistic
and motivational.
3) The cover
story giving background must generate
need to act and allow opportunities to both practice the
skill goals and seek the knowledge goals.
4) The role
a student will play
must be central to the mission's completion (the individual
who must accomplish the skill and knowledge goals).
5) The scenario
operation activities that must be worked
through by the student must be numerous in order to
reinforce skills, directly related to the goals, and have
decision points with positive or negative consequences.
Additionally, students must expect that they will have to
pause, evaluate, and try again in order to overcome any
negative consequence setbacks.
6) The resources
must clear, well
organized, accessible, and provide all the information
needed to succeed.
7) The feedback
must be given
within a context that will motivate students to try again.
This may be done as consequence of action, coaching, or an
expert's advice about a similar experience.
