Assignment 1:
Chem Review |
ONE
The purpose of Assignment 1: Chemistry Review, is to help all students achieve a basic understanding of the chemistry concepts that will be used repeatedly throughout the year in Biology.
(Hint: if you right-click and "open in new tab", you will be able to go back and forth between the various windows to compare the presented material.)
Hierarchy:
1) Print
this page.
2) In the column that says: "educated guess", search the wikipedia to copy a definition.
3) In the column that says: "definition", visit this page or this page (from college lecture notes) for a proper definition to copy, ord you can even visit dictionary.com or W-M if you wish.
4) In the column that says: "my definition", you should now TRANSLATE
the first two difintions into YOUR OWN words.
(This does NOT have to be in science words, but MUST NOT be a repeat of THEIR
words.)
5) Write a 2-3 sentence proposal describing how you think these structures are related.
Common Biological
Atoms:
1) Print this diagram, and
take out three different colored pens/pencils.
2) Color in the KEY for each of the three types of food nutrients: proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids.
3) Visit this page,
and use your colored pens to trace the box for each type of atom that you find
in the nutrients.
(Note: boxes may be traced more
than once.)
4) List the 4 most common atoms in food.
5) In one sentence, explain how proteins be distinguished from carbohydrates and lipids?
Atomic Structure:
1) Take out a blank paper and colored pens/pencils.
2) Watch this video showing how atoms move.
3) Watch this video showing how atoms attach to each other to form molecules.
4) Open this page, and
use colors to copy the diagram on your blank paper.
Label each subatomic particle and give it's charge.
5) In 2 sentences, explain which subatomic particle determines how interactive an atom is. Justify your response.
States of
Matter:
1) Turn over the paper you used to draw the atom.
2) Open this page to watch a video of how matter acts in all three states.
3) Open this page to view a summary diagram of the three states.
4) When changing from one state to another, matter is NEITHER
gained NOR lost.
When changing from one state to another, energy is EITHER gained OR lost.
In 3-5 sentences, use YOUR OWN words to describe the three states of matter, and how you think matter changes between the states.
