Architectural

Perhaps characteristically, when one thinks of Scottish architecture, one thinks of castles. The castles of Scotland are world renowned, and the most famous of these within the land is that of the Edinburgh Castle...

Edinburgh CastleEdinburgh Castle is located at the top of the Royal Mile, at the west end of Edinburgh's Old Town. The volcanic Castle Rock offers a naturally defended position, with sheer cliffs to north and south, and a steep ascent from the west. The only easy approach is from the town to the east, and the castle's defenses are situated accordingly. The castle is divided into three areas, or "wards", separated by gates, rising up to the summit area of the Castle Rock.

In front of the castle is a long sloping forecourt known as the Esplanade. Originally the Spur, a 16th-century hornwork, was located here. The present Esplanade was laid out as a parade ground in 1753, and extended in 1845. It is upon this Esplanade that the Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place annually. From the Esplanade may be seen the Half Moon Battery, with the Royal Palace to its left, and the main gate below, which gives access to the Lower Ward. (Wikipedia)

Geographical

Scotland Relief Map

Scotland has over 790 islands, divided into four main groups: Shetland, Orkney, and the Inner Hebrides, and Outer Hebrides as seen from the relief map (left). There are numerous bodies of freshwater including Loch Lomond and Loch Ness.

The Loch Tummel (pictured just below) is approximately 11 kilometers long from east to west and is just under 1 kilometer wide. The loch is popular with anglers who fish for trout, and the Loch Tummel Sailing Club (LTSC) is based at Foss on the south west shore of the loch. From April and October the club organizes dinghy racing. The Loch Tummel is also popular with campers. (Wikipedia)Loch Tummel
