Simple Internet Safety Terms

Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) contracts encourage responsible behavior by students and staff and give administrators enforceable rules for acceptable use of school computers.

Chat - Real-time communication over the internet. You type and send messages that appear almost instantly on the computer monitors of the other people who are participating in the chat.

Chatroom - The chatroom is the place or location online where the chat is taking place. Many chatrooms are established so that people can discuss a common interest like music or movies. For example Teagan likes to go to the "Monster Movie " chatroom so that she can talk about her favorite monster movies.

Cyberbully - A person who uses the Internet to harass or intimidate someone else. An e-mail message with a phony from: address is a common way to reach someone without identifying the sender.

Cyberspace - Anyplace users can go on the Internet, including chat rooms, Web sites, and message boards.

Cyberstalking/Harassment - Terms that can refer to the online enticement of children; rude or threatening messages; slanderous information; or repeated, unwanted messages.

Email - Electronic mail (or e-mail or email) is the most widely used service offered by the Internet today

Flaming – Angry, rude arguments used in Email, Chat rooms or Instant Messaging (IM's)

Google-ing - Putting a name in the Google search line to see what the results will be.

Hyperlink - A hyperlink is a word, phrase, or image that you can click on to jump to a new document or a new section within the current document or web page.

Instant Messaging (IM) - A service that allows people to send and get messages almost instantly. To send messages using instant messaging you need to download an Instant-Messaging program and know the Instant-Messaging address of another person who uses the same Instant-Messaging program

Internet - A worldwide network of computers communicating with each other via phone lines, satellite links, wireless networks, and cable systems.

Internet Safety - Rules that you should follow to keep yourself safe while using the Internet.

Log-in Name - Also known as a user name, screen name, or member name. It should not be your real first and last name, but something made up that you can remember but that doesn't tell anyone else who you are in real life. Always have your parent or guardian help you make a log-in name.

Netiquette - A play on the word "etiquette," referring to correct and respectful behavior on the Internet. Internet + Etiquette=Netiquette. You must have manners while on the Internet too!

Password - Similar to a password in real life. It is a secret word, set of numbers, set of letters, or a combination of letters and numbers that only you know. Together with your user or log-in name, your password allows you to enter some Web sites. Your password should never be shared with anyone other than your parents.

Personal (Personal) Information - Any information that could help a stranger identify who you are or where you live.

World Wide Web - The Web is the part of the Internet that consists of pages (documents) linked to each other around the world. These pages have pictures, sounds, and more.
