Introduction

Title: The Road Rules to Internet Safety

This curriculum web is designed to introduce elementary students to Internet Safety. This curriculum web is designed for 4th or 5th grade students. We will use many web sites, worksheets, and personal exploration. This curriculum web is a good way to begin the school year before students begin using the Internet in a classroom or lab.

The web page was designed so that each page is very consistent in appearance and navigation features. The one thing I have learned being a technology teacher for elementary students; keep it consistent! So if you find this curriculum web a bit repetitive in design, it was designed with elementary students in mind.

This star represents "Teacher Notes." If you see this star there will be information posted for you, the teacher about the mission.

The stop sign will be posted at all hyperlinks.

The traffic light is posted right after the supply list. It is the sign for student preparedness.

Each mission has a student rubric at the end. Download the corresponding spreadsheet to keep track of student grades.

Grading Chart

Rewards: Rewards are always important when you are in elementary school. I have placed reward websites at the end of each mission. These websites are great reinforces of Internet safety. I would encourage you to allow your students to become familiar with the reward websites.

Aim Statement

The Road Rules to Internet Safety curriculum web is designed to provide 4th and 5th grade students with the necessary tools to be safe while using the Internet. Upon completion of the curriculum web each student will be able to navigate through the World Wide Web knowing what to be aware of and how to avoid situations that will/could be unsafe. They will know how to communicate with others while on the web and using proper netiquette rules. This curriculum web will teach about Internet ethics including plagiarism.

Rationale

Many students do not know or understand the pitfalls they could encounter while using the web.  Unfortunately, I often hear from my own students that they are unsupervised while using the Internet. Students need to be aware of the dangers of the Internet. They need to know what to avoid, how to behave on the Internet, and the legal issues of copying information from the Internet.  I want students to learn how to email properly, how to avoid chat rooms, and finally feel comfortable and safe using the Internet. The Internet has a lot of great information for students but as we know, there are many things on the Internet not suitable for students to view.  This curriculum web is a great starting point for students to learn basic safety rules for using the Internet.
