For the Modern Man

Follow these simple steps of Internet Etiquette and become the man you never knew you could be!

  1. Be Aware
  2. Be Yourself
  3. Be Gracious
  4. Behave

1. Be Aware: Keep your wits about you.

The World Wide Web is full of interesting people from all walks of life. Getting to know people from around the world is an intruiging opportunity that has never been easier! While excitement may be a natural response, the Modern Man is never impulsive. Prudence is a man's best friend! When visiting a new forum or frolicking in the blogosphere, ask yourself the following questions:

The Modern Man always lurks before he leaps! Taking a few moments to assess your surroundings can make the difference in learning something new and hurt feelings all around. Do your part to become a well-informed citizen of the internet.

2. Be Yourself: Honesty is the best policy.

Have you ever wanted to be someone else? Well the Modern Man hasn't! Take pride in who you are, and don't let others look down on you. People's rights do not stop at a computer screen! While it is perfectly fine to be conservative in what you put online, it is not ok to be dishonest. catfishing, identity theft, and copyright infringment are all examples of ways that people hurt others by presenting a false image of themselves.

Furthermore, the Modern Man is ever vigilant. It is not only important that he avoid deceitful behavior, but also that he report such activity to the proper authorities.

3. Be Gracious: It's the Golden Rule.

As a Modern Man you may not be new to the wiles of the internet as many of your fellow surfers are. It is likely that during your travels you will come across poor grammar, egregious spelling errors, and inane questions. While frustrating, the errors of others does not give you an excuse to flame them. On the contrary, this is an opportunity to use your position of influence to educate or advise others in a kind way.

To date, nearly 3 billion people have access to the internet! Some are not native English speakers, others have little to no formal education, and still others have limited experience interacting online. You may even come across trolls during your digital adventures. Regardless of their behavior, whatever the intent appears to be, the Modern Man is always willing to grant others the benefit of the doubt. After all, your mother always said, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you!"

For privacy, you may want to encrypt your emails. Encryption systems can use two keys - a public key and a private key - that allow only the recipient to decode the message.

4. Behave: The internet never forgets!

Since the Modern Man is a distinguished individual, he may often be called upon to settle disputes in the neigborhood or calm a disgruntled coworker. Every word he speaks is saturated with poise and profundity. Every action is purposeful and dignified. Even so, most daily interactions are ephemeral things that are forgotten with the passage of time. Not so on the internet!

Remember that every picture you post, list you like, and tweet you twitter leaves a mark forever! One day your kids, or even your grandkids, will be able to see what you've posted publicly online. Furthermore, even private email accounts and cloud servers can be hacked. It is wise to treat every bit of digital information in your possession as if it will be shared with your family and friends.
