Ever wonder why your last name is what it is?

In the Middle Ages the need for more than just a first name arose due to the increase in town populations. The solution for the name confusion was a surname (aka: last name).

People in Midieval European towns received surnames for many different reasons. Common adjectives were added to first names when two Michaels lived in the same town. The Michael with Red hair, would be called Michael the Red. Over generations this turns into the surname Redd.
